Preparing for a performance is a journey. Typically we prepare for our next performance by focussing on learning repertoire (or a routine, script), and developing our technical, interpretive and expressive skills. We then hop on the express train that takes us straight to our final destination – THE performance. Performances can easily be derailed with this approach because we miss a number of crucial stops along the journey. To perform our best when it really counts we need to allocate time each practice to developing critical performance skills that will enable us to effectively manage nerves, release tension, stay focussed, build confidence, cope with mishaps, and remain composed under pressure.
